Night After Night
Birds chirp with vigour and life
Below cold ground mould blooming patterns
across once smiling cheeks
Night after night
you out there
writhing in microscopic frenzy
Laid out in willow in a field—
no box or shield.
An invitation to dine
to beetle and blowfly alike
Better laid out like grain on a bird table—
carried off in blood and feathers
When I die
I won’t gift nature its feast—
I’ll gift my sons peace
Send me up in smoke unseen
beneath the wings of birds
